Learning fast!

Like a lot of kids, I had a 10 gallon aquarium growing up.  I kept a betta in it, then goldfish, then a LOT of goldfish….. then a minamilst phase with a few zebra danios, and plecos galore.   My tanks were simple.   My fish survived and I enjoyed them. Everything seemed so easy and simple and I rarely lost a fish.

As I grew up I grew out of my aquarium phase and didn’t think about it again until seeing one of the poor bettas in a cup at a chain pet store in my area.   He looked so sad and I knew I had to save Mr. Bubbles.  Mr. Bubbles has lived with me for about 3 years now and he’s just as beautiful as ever.   When I received a 20 gallon tank for a gift I didn’t think twice about going to my LFS and picking out some neon tetras, adding them into the tank right away with some water conditioner.   I was shocked the next morning when I turned on their light to discover them all dead.

Fast forward a year and I’ve learned so much. Turns out I had been incredibly lucky to be able to just throw fish into water treated with conditioner and not have them die.  I learned about cycling tanks.   I learned about the benefits of a planted tank.  I learned how to aquascape with plants that will thrive in their environment.  I learned that just because a fish doesn’t die, doesn’t mean they’re happy or healthy.  And I learned not to believe everything you read on the internet.

This is where Discover Discus was born.  I want to take you on a journey with me through the hobby as we learn together about best practices and hard lessons that will hopefully take us all to our ultimate goals!  Looking forward to learning and growing alongside all of you.
